Charter Communications Inks USCCP Naming-Rights Deal
By Rich Rosenthal, Recreation Supt.March 22, 2010
The Medford Parks and Recreation Department and Charter Communications have entered into a long-term naming-rights agreement for the baseball field at the U.S. Cellular Community Park multi-sport complex.
Approved by the Medford City Council, the 10-year, $350,000 agreement supplies in-kind services to the Parks and Recreation Department in the form of advertising and production credit that will be used to offset costs associated with promoting City of
Medford
recreation programs and services.
The contract changes the name of USCCP Field 9 to “Charter Field” and provides Charter Communications with premium outfield and scoreboard signage, as well as additional signage within the park and at the
Santo
Community Center
gymnasium. The agreement also provides Charter with print advertising in the City’s tri-annual Community Connection programs and services guide and a hyperlink on sportsmedford.com.
“This naming rights agreement continues our department’s efforts to partner with local and national companies for the betterment of the community,” Parks and Recreation Director Brian Sjothun said. “We look at this as a way cost effective way to promote our programs and services to the community."
Since the grand opening of the USCCP multi-sport complex in May 2009, Charter Field has hosted over 250 youth and adult baseball and softball league and tournament games and is the home of the
Cascade
Christian
High School
baseball team. The field has also been utilized for football and lacrosse practices.
“At Charter, we are proud of the great relationship we have with the communities in which we serve,” said Frank Antonovich, Vice President and General Manager for Charter’s operations in the Northwest. “Our goal is to play an active role in helping the community be a great place to live and work.”
The value of the naming-rights contract was established by a 2005 feasibility study commissioned by the City of
Medford
. In 2006, the City Council adopted a resolution permitting commercial naming-rights agreements to fund, develop or enhance city-operated facilities and programs.
